GEAR-UP Issues Come Before State-Tribal Relations Committee

Efforts to have more current and former state officials appear in front of a legislative committee to answer questions about the GEAR UP grant program fell short.  The State-Tribal Relations Committee, meeting in Vermillion, voted five to five on a resolution to subpoena those officials, ending the effort.  Committee Chairman, Senator Troy Heinert of Mission, said the committee didn’t have the authority to issue subpoenas…

Senator Stace Nelson of Fulton challenged that ruling…

Heinert rejected Nelson’s arguments…

The committee then adjourned without taking any further action.  Meanwhile trial dates have been set for three people charged in the GEAR UP case. Stephanie Huber’s trial is scheduled for March first through the ninth. Stacy Phelps and Dan Guericke are set to stand trial June 25th through July 20 in Lake Andes.
